LAVIN STARS IN SEASON OPENER

Atkins Substitute Center, Carries off Scoring Honors with Six Field Goals

The University of Kentucky began its 1921 basketball career Tuesday night at the university gymnasium with a 38 to 13 victory over the Kentucky Wesleyan College five.

The Wildcats piled up a comfortable lead in the first half of the contest, and in the last round Coach Buchheit sent in a stream of substitutes that increased the margin at a faster rate than had the regulars. The visitors brought few substitutes with them, and the regulars grew tired and fell easy prey to the work of the second string men.

Wesleyan started the game by jumping into a 4 to 0 lead through the quick work of McCourt and Van Winkle, the visiting forwards, but this was soon overcome and the K.W.C.'s never had another chance of regaining the lead.

"Bobby" Lavin was the outstanding star of the first half of the contest. Playing roving guard, he made two field goals during the game, one of which was from near the center of the floor, and broke up more plays of the visiting team and figured in more floor work than any other member of the Wildcat squad. Freddie Fest, the lengthy center, carried off the scoring honors as long as he was in the mixup, with a total of five field goals, but Atkins, who substituted for him during the last half, shot in a string of six field goals in the last several minutes of play and topped the scoring list.

Hayden Gets In

"Bill" King did some speedy floor work for the local team during the first half, shooting two field goals and one foul. It was the Lexington High star's first intercollege game and he showed up like the veteran that he already is. Captain Hayden substituted for King in the last half and played a stellar role until he left the floor. It was thought that Hayden's sprained ankle would keep him out of the mixup, but it didn't and he played a hot game all the time he was in.

Van Winkle, forward, led in scoring for the Wesleyans, with a record of five field and one foul goals. McCourt caged the other marker of the visiting team from the middle of the court.

The game was slow throughout. Occasionally a pair of players drew applause with brilliant passing feats, but the most of the playing of both sides was done at leisure.
