CENTRE DOWNS STATE QUINTET
Final Game For the Championship Goes to Danville Boys
BOTH TEAMS PLAY WELL
The intercollegiate basketball championship of the State of Kentucky was decided last night before a large crowd when Centre College, Danville, playing true to form, triumphed over the husky bunch representing the University of Kentucky, Lexington. The final count being 24 to 12. The contest was played at the St. Xavier gymnasium with Hinton, of Georgetown, officiating as referee.
Despite the fact that the score was a trifle one-sided, the game was one of the most exciting witnessed here this season and a hard-fought affair from start to finish. Both teams demonstrated that they had undergone splendid training for this grueling contest and not one moment of play was wasted on either side.
In two previous games played this season each quintet had scored a victory over the other, the Centre boys downing their opponents at Danville in a hot struggle, while the State representatives came back and won the second encounter at Lexington by the close score of 22 to 20. The third contest played here last night marked the final for State honors.
Both teams presented their strongest lineups in the final combat and each individual played a star game for his respective five. Fast dribbling on both sides and the making of difficult baskets featured the contest.
The score at the end of the first half stood 8 to 4 in favor of Centre and the Danville boys lost no time increasing this lead right at the very start of the final half. Davis and McMillan, playing forward for Centre were the chief point-makers for the winners. Davis scored 10 and McMillan 8. Bell, playing guard for Centre, scored the remaining 6 points. Tate, at center, played a splendid game, as did Waldin at guard. The goal shooting of Thomas at forward for State featured, while Shanklin succeeded in making two long difficult goals. Zerfoss, who substituted for Marsh at center for State near the close of the second half, scored two points in rapid fashion.
