STATE DEFEATS LOCAL QUINTET
Wildcats Sweep Cardinals From Feet By Fast and Brilliant Playing
REFEREE IS CRITICISED
In the fastest game of basketball seen on a local floor this year the Kentucky State University defeated the University of Louisville quintet by the score of 32 to 24. The Wildcats put up an excellent exhibition of basketball, but even at that they should not have won by the score that they did, as the locals were completely off form and played by far the worst game they have shown this year. The U. of L. players seemed to have stage fright and in several critical instances they either fumbled the ball or passed it to an opponent. All this season the local's teamwork has been their greatest asset, but in this game, their most important one of the year, their clever passing was completely lacking in its sureness and quickness.
The game was very fast and as a result it was also rough and many fouls were called on both teams. The referee, Golde, being from Cincinnati, where they are extremely strict on fouling, called many fouls which seemed to the spectators as if he was drawing the line rather close and as a result not a little complaint was heard against him from both teams. The locals, however, who have been used to playing a fast dribbling game which calls for some roughness, were probably under a greater handicap than their opponents and voiced strong protest against the official.
The game was played before the largest crowd of the season. A notable feature of the game was the fact that not a man was put out because of fouls nor was a substitution made by either team. The locals were anxious to win this game, as it would have given them a clear claim to the State championship and somewhat even up old scores with the Wildcats, but as it is another game will have to be played between the two teams or the championship of the State will remain a tie between State and the University of Louisville.
Fast and Furious
The first half was fast and furious throughout with the advantage all in favor of the visitors, whose bewildering attack and stone wall defense seemed to put the locals up in the air. The whole teams played with a brilliancy that had a wonderful effect on not only the spectators but the local players, and as they kept this up during the entire half, never slowing up for a minute, the locals were unable to hit their stride. The score at the end of the first period was 20 to 10 in the Wildcats' favor. In the second half the Red and Black players came back with more strength and for a while it looked as if the locals might overtake the big lead of the visitors, as at one time they were only four points behind. Here the Wildcats took a brace, however, and began playing the slashing game that they put up during the first half, and as the locals came back at them with the same class of ball the game continued nip and tuck for a few minutes until the Wildcats obtained a big lead when they slowed up somewhat. Although the locals fought until the final whistle blew, they could not overtake them.
Long Shots Feature
Two long shots by Kornfeld, who was closely watched by the State team, were the features of the game. If the local captain could have had the shots that the others did there would have been a big difference in the score of the game if not in the result, but as it was Kornfeld got but few open shots at the basket. Server was the star for State, while the playing of Hart, who made the majority of points for the Wildcats, and also of Earl Zerfoss at guard, was worthy of mention. Daniels and McCaleb also put up a good game for the locals.
