Basket Ball Season for Kentucky Colleges Closes With Score 30 to 24

The basketball season for Kentucky colleges has closed Friday night, and a crowd of more than five hundred witnessed the hard fought game between State and Transylvania Universities which resulted in a victory for State by a score of 30 to 24, and State taking second honors in the basketball field.

This was the third game between the two local teams, State taking two of the three games, each of which was as close and exciting a game as one might wish to see and their total scores for the series stand 70 to 66 for the winners.

In addition to being one of the hardest and cleanest games of the season it was also one of the noisiest as whistles, bells and horns, added to the college yells made a noise that was deafening and sometimes players would hold their hands to their ears to keep out the din.

An incident, which looked for a minute like it would become serious, happened during the intermission between halves. A Transylvania pennant dangling from the gallery, held by a Hamilton College student, was jerked to the floor by a State student. One of the Transylvania substitute players immediately grasped one end of the pennant and that section of the floor was alive at once. Cool heads among the Blue and White men prevented a clash on the floor and the pennant was thrown back into the gallery.

The first honors among the State Colleges were won by Central University and the honor to be decided Friday night was that of second position and each man in the game did his best work throughout the game.

Central Finishes Season In First Place Without Difficulty

State University won second place in college basketball honors in Kentucky last night by taking the third and decisive game from Transylvania, score 30 to 24. The contest was all that the first two were and more. At least one man on each team played the closing minutes of the first half and the great part of the last half absolutely on his nerve.

No harder games ever were played in Kentucky than the three between Transylvania and State Universities this year, and at the close of the last of the series the points stand 70 to 66 in favor of State.

In the first game State University led the greater part of the way, Transylvania showing greater strength in the closing minutes and winning 23 to 18. In the second game Transylvania marked the pace until the last two minutes. Then State won, 22 to 19. Last night Transylvania was ahead throughout the first half and finished the twenty minutes with 11 to State's 10.

Transylvania Takes Lead

Within three minutes after the second half began Transylvania was in front 14 to 10. After eight minutes of play, a field goal could at almost any time change the orders of the teams, and until the final four minutes neither team kept the lead more than a minute or two.

Four minutes before time was called Transylvania was two points ahead. Three field goals and two fouls made the score 30 to 24 a the close.

Gaiser of State, and Captain Francis of Transylvania, were in no condition to play, but they were in the game all the time. Gaiser was out of wind after ten minutes of play. Francis had a swollen jaw and was too ill to continue at his usual speed. Harrison scored one field goal in the first half and four in the second, which gives an indication of the way Francis stayed with him. He played absolutely on his nerve and it was not enough for Harrison is the strongest man and the most accurate on the Blue and White team.

State Second in Kentucky Race

State University has second place in the Kentucky race, having won two games out of the three from Transylvania, every game being fought out fair and square. But the stronger team of the two may be named by flipping a coin as accurately as any other way. If gamblers wagered on another game no odds would be given.

Neither university could justly claim that it lost any game of the three except on deserved grounds. But in every game so close, there are several things which may be cited to show the potency of what people call luck. Last night in the first half a Transylvania man over-reached himself and fouled a many trying for a goal. The man made the goal, throwing the ball over his shoulder with one hand, a remarkable performance. One point was awarded for the foul. The man missed the try, but the ball fell from the rim of the basket into the hands of a State player under the circle and he tossed for two points.

Spectacular Goals Win

Spectacular goals by Harrison and Marx in the last four minutes, won the game for State. Harrison made a thirty-foot goal on the run and Marx threw the most difficult kind of a basket - over his shoulder with one hand, from the line on the end of the floor.

Five hundred and two people were admitted, exclusive of passes, making a total of at least 550. The gallery was crowded and the playing floor was filled to the lines on the sides and ends. Transylvania received $32, showing that season tickets, a great many of which were sold Friday, counted heavily in the receipts.

Pennant Starts Near-Row

State Improvement Great

Wesleyan College defeated State University early in the season at Winchester, but State improved more than 100 per cent since that game and Wesleyan undoubtedly could not repeat the trick.

Every man in the struggle last night deserves more credit than can be given him in this story. Hard as the game was, it was clean.
