HIGH SCHOOL WINS
STATE UNIVERSITY FIVE LOSES ITS FIRST GAME OF BASKET BALL PLAYED THIS SEASON
The Lexington High School basket ball team won over the State University five at the State Armory by a score of 36 to 29 Friday night. The game was well played and superior team work won, the High School team being the equal of any High School team ever seen here, while the State team was playing its first game of the season and they have not had practice enough to develop team work as yet, but the material was in evidence and later in the season the team will doubtless prove to be one of the best State has had.
The game was fast from start to finish and the playing was all of a clean variety and no fouls were called for anything but the usual causes in most every game.
State's next game will be played next Friday night at the State Armory with the Transylvania five.
Game Writeup - Lexington Herald
STATE FIVE LOSES TO HIGH SCHOOL TEAM
Boys Victorious by Score of 36 to 29 in Good Contest
TEAM WORK WINS
Gold and Blue Are Light But Are Fast and Play Together Well
In the opening game of the State University basket ball season for 1911 between the State five and the team from Lexington High School, at the State armory last night, the High school boys won because they played the better ball and showed that they had the edge on the Blue and White men in training and team work.
Credit to High School
The High school has a good fast team and for a high school team it is one that would be a credit to the high school of any city in the state. They are light and none of the men have the height of the supposedly ideal basket ball player, but they have the team work, which counts for more than anything else in basket ball and they are fast on their feet.
On the other hand the State five is composed of what will undoubtedly prove to be the best team that has been turned out of the university in years when they have trained more and get to doing better team work. This is their first game of the season and as here are only two men who played the game Friday night who have ever played together before, and they were at a natural disadvantage.
Practice Sort Time
The State men have been practicing only since the first of the year and it can not be said that the men who made up the team last night will be the men who will represent the university during the remainder of the season. There is good material at the university, and Coach Iddings is giving all of the men on the squad a chance to make the team in an effort to determine the best players and it is likely that further practice will develop several men who will take part in at least a few of the games.
The game last night was fast from start to finish and the playing was all of a clean variety and no fouls were called for anything but the usual causes in most every game.
No one man on either team played a superior game to that of any of the other players on his team and though Guyn did most of the scoring for the High school, with ten goals and five thrown fouls to his credit, and Hart led the State men in the scoring with six goals and eight fouls.
The attendance was good for an early season game and much interest was displayed by the rooters. The High school had about as many supporters as did State.
