Locals Do Good Work But Are Unable to Beat the Record-Breakers
The Central University basketball team won the championship of Kentucky and of the South Saturday night by defeating the State University five in the latter's gymnasium by a score of 31 to 13. The game was exceedingly rough and one of the hardest and fastest ever seen on the Lexington floor. Although considerably outweighed and playing against a record breaking team that towered far above them, the players from the local university did themselves proud and were in the game every second.
They were completely smothered, however, and only for a few minutes at the beginning of the second half, when fast heady playing rolled up eight points before the Central men could score a field goal, did they have a chance to win.
In the last few minutes Hess played a wonderful game for Central, tossing goal after goal and making one on a toss-up. Barbee, Captain Rodes, Marks, Gaiser, Threlkeld -- all the State team played remarkable ball against overwhelming odds and it would be hard to name the star of the blue and white.
Threlkeld wrenched his ankle in the first half and it had to be wrapped but he continued in the contest gamely, though he had a limp. The two Seelbachs and Hess starred for Central and were too big and strong for their opponents. On account of defeating every team in Kentucky without a single defeat and by their two one-sided victories over Vanderbilt, Central is undisputed champion of the South. Their only defeat by a college team was by Tennessee and they swamped Tennessee in the second game.
At the end of the first half Saturday night the score was 18 to 5. The crowd was too big for the armory and pushed inside the lines till special floor rules were necessary.
Hardest Game of the Season Won by Brilliant Exhibition of Tall Reaching
Packed as thick as sardines in a box was the crowd that gathered in the Armory last Saturday evening to witness the championship game between Central and our team. None of us doubted but that the odds were greatly against us, but the way our team played and the hard fight our men put up was a surprise to many. Almost neck and neck with them in the middle of the second half, it seemed that our chances were to develop as they did in the Thanksgiving football game, but luck favored the visitors and goal after goal was made from all quarters until hope vanished as the twilight before darkness.
There was very little star playing. Every man did his best at all stages, and a more perfect exhibition of guarding is seldom seen that was displayed on both sides. Hess did some remarkable work at goal throwing, and to him and his luck is largely due the wide difference in the score. Probably the best playing on our side was that of Barbee. Rodes showed his usual lightning speed and was in the game at all times. Threlkeld guarded like a man and kept his head possibly better than any other man on the floor. Little Marx reminded one of "Fighting Joe" Wheeler, and was there with the goods. Gaiser is a football man primarily and for all time, and his occasional exhibition of football tactics were a source of delight to all the State supporters.

CENTRAL UNIVERSITY WINS ROUGH CONTEST
Lexington, Ky., March 5 - (Special) - Central University won the championship of Kentucky and the South tonight by defeating State University of Kentucky in the latter's hall here by a score of 31 to 13. The game was the roughest ever played in Lexington and the spectators crowded the lines, making special floor rules necessary.
State played hard, but the two Seelbachs and Hess were too good for them all the way. The playing of the Seelbach brothers pulled the game through until the last ten minutes, when Hess played some of the most remarkable ball ever seen in Kentucky. After State had run the score up to 13 against 19 he almost single handed dropped goal after goal in rapid succession. Central has not been beaten by a Kentucky college, and afterward overwhelmingly defeated the University of Tennessee, the only Southern team to win from them during the season.
Game Preview - BASKET BALL CHAMPS Lexington Leader (March 5, 1910)
The basket ball championship of the State will be finally settled Saturday night when teams representing Central University and State University meet at Buell Armory for a game of basket ball. The contest will be called at 8 o'clock and as it will be the last chance to see the crack Central five in action a good crowd is expected to be present. Central has already defeated State once, but since that time Coach Sweetland has been at work and he now has a much better team.
