CONTEST VERY ROUGH
Locals Do Good Work But Are Unable to Beat the Record-Breakers
The Central University basketball team won the championship of Kentucky and of the South Saturday night by defeating the State University five in the latter's gymnasium by a score of 31 to 13. The game was exceedingly rough and one of the hardest and fastest ever seen on the Lexington floor. Although considerably outweighed and playing against a record breaking team that towered far above them, the players from the local university did themselves proud and were in the game every second.
They were completely smothered, however, and only for a few minutes at the beginning of the second half, when fast heady playing rolled up eight points before the Central men could score a field goal, did they have a chance to win.
In the last few minutes Hess played a wonderful game for Central, tossing goal after goal and making one on a toss-up. Barbee, Captain Rodes, Marks, Gaiser, Threlkeld -- all the State team played remarkable ball against overwhelming odds and it would be hard to name the star of the blue and white.
Threlkeld wrenched his ankle in the first half and it had to be wrapped but he continued in the contest gamely, though he had a limp. The two Seelbachs and Hess starred for Central and were too big and strong for their opponents. On account of defeating every team in Kentucky without a single defeat and by their two one-sided victories over Vanderbilt, Central is undisputed champion of the South. Their only defeat by a college team was by Tennessee and they swamped Tennessee in the second game.
At the end of the first half Saturday night the score was 18 to 5. The crowd was too big for the armory and pushed inside the lines till special floor rules were necessary.
