Obituary - Bert Edward Phillip Johnson, Louisville Courier-Journal (July 25, 2023)
Bert Edward Phillip Johnson of Sarasota, Florida died peacefully on July 23, 2023.
Mr. Johnson was born April 3, 1936 in Lexington, Kentucky. He attended University High School and the University of Kentucky, from which he graduated with a Bachelor's degree.
At the University of Kentucky, Mr. Johnson was a two-year letterman in baseball, and lettered three years in basketball. He was one of the last surviving members of UK's famous "Fiddlin' Five" that won the 1958 NCAA championship. He was a lifetime member of the UK Alumni Association.
Mr. Johnson was the son of Bert Johnson, a former all-SEC running back for UK in the 1930s, and Wilhelmina Lampert Johnson. Mr. Johnson's grandfather, Professor Carl Lampert, founded the University of Kentucky Music Department, the UK Marching Band, and wrote the music for the school fight song, "On, On, U of K" and the UK Alma Mater.
After teaching and coaching basketball for two years in the Jefferson County school system in Louisville, Kentucky, he was employed by Winn-Dixie Stores, Inc., where he served as the Human Resources Director in the Louisville Division for 25 years.
During his career, Mr. Johnson served on the Board of Directors of Volunteers of America, the Louisville Urban League, the Salvation Army and Wayside Christian Mission.
After 31 years with Winn-Dixie, he moved to Sarasota, where he was a member of St. James United Methodist Church, served as Usher/Greeter Coordinator, and was a member of United Methodist Men at St. James. Later, he became a member of First United Methodist Church in Sarasota.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Johnson, and his former wife, Mary Joyce Proffitt Johnson. He is survived by his son, Richard Phillips Johnson (Jill) of Lexington, Kentucky and two grandchildren, Mary Grace Johnson and Maxwell Keller Johnson; and his stepdaughter, Lori Passons of Palatka, Florida.
A private family service will be held in Sarasota. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the University of Kentucky College of Education."
