News Item - Bell of Alabama is Expected to Strengthen Rupp Wildcats, Lexington Leader (January 3, 1944)
Bad news is in the making for future opponents of the University of Kentucky basketball team, winners in seven of eight starts. Coach Adolph Rupp of the Wildcats announced today that Maurice (Red) Bell, freshman guard for the University of Alabama last season, would enter Kentucky this quarter if his credits are acceptable. Bell will be eligible to play under the Southeastern Conference's new ruling on transfer students.
The addition of Bell means more scoring power for the Cats and more worries for the opposition. Bell performed against Kentucky in both games last season and tallied eight points in the Tide's 41-32 home win and 12 markers in their 67-41 loss here.
Bell is five feet, nine inches tall and hails from Montgomery, Ala. he is a sophomore and was noticeable on the hardwood last season not only for his ability but also for his flaming red hair and the number 13 on his uniform.
