Wayne Lichty (1921-2006)
WATERLOO - Wayne was born June 25, 1921, to Ed and Ora (Sheeler) Lichty. He grew up on a farm just south of Waterloo in Orange Township. He has two brothers, H.J. and Richard. Wayne attended Orange High School, graduating in 1940. after high school he went to college at Iowa State, attending for only one semester. The same year that Wayne graduated from high school, his wife (Marie Callen) graduated from Iowa State University, earning a degree in Home Economics. She taught at Orange Township School in Home Economics and that is how they met. The two were married in 1943.
While Marie was teaching, Wayne farmed and officiated basketball games. Wayne got his start officiating basketball games at the YMCA. Then in 1951, he started working small college games. He worked 10 years in the Missouri Valley Conference and 18 years in the Big Eight where he officiated three Regional NCAA tournaments. Wayne also officiated at the Olympic Games in 1964, held in Japan, and 1968, held in Mexico City. He was also Commissioner of the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for 20 years. He was inducted into the Iowa High School Hall of Fame in 1980.
This very active man was also a member of South Waterloo Church of the Brethren, where he was a moderator for two years and also on the church board. He was a past president and chairman of the Board of Directors of the Waterloo YMCA, past Kiwanis President, and served on the Friendship Village board.
Wayne has two children, Dale Craig (Dana) Lichty, who resides in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Debra Rae (David) Owens, residing in Des Moines, Iowa. He has four grandchildren, Kurt (Joy) Owens of Waterloo, Iowa, Clayton (Tammi) Lichty of Ankeny, Iowa, and Justin and Andrew Lichty of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. He is the proud great-grandfather of six, Parker, Matthew and Emma Owens, and Madelynn, Nolan and Hayden Lichty.
Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday at South Waterloo Church of the Brethren. Inunrnment will be in the Orange Township Cemetery. Hagarty-Wachoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the church or Allen Memorial Hospital.
