Big 10 Basketball Referee Anthony Tortorello
by Bill Jauss
Anthony 'Tony'' Tortorello, one of the Midwest's best known and most respected basketball referees for more than 35 years, died Thursday. He was 74.
Mr. Tortorello, a native Chicagoan, officiated at all levels of the game from 1946 to 1987. He worked one season in the NBA, and officiated three Illinois state high school championships. He was best known, however, as a referee in college games and worked 22 seasons for the Big 10.
For most of his career in the Big 10, Tortorello was regularly assigned to big games. He earned the respect of players and of coaches such as Ray Meyer of De Paul, George Ireland of Loyola, Al McGuire of Marquette and Indiana's Bobby Knight.
Mr. Tortorello was a member of the Chicago Catholic League and Illinois Coaches Association Halls of Fame. Mr. Tortorello is survived by two daughters, Barbara and Terryann; two sons, Tom and Bob; and 20 grandchildren. Mass will be said at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Juliana Catholic Church, 7201 N. Oketo Ave.
