Obituary - Nashville Tennessean (December 29, 2000)
TOOMBES, Paul E., Sr. - Age 89. Wednesday, December 27, 2000. Preceded in death by his daughter, Marie Toombs Friar; sister, Estella Toombs Crutcher and brother, Clarence Toombs.
Survived by beloved wife of 68 years, Ida Louis Toombs; daughters, Nona Lee Toombs (HUSBAND) Allen and Linda Toombs (Bill) Fletcher; son, Paul E. (Cathy) Toombs, Jr.; brother, Marshall Toombs; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Toombs was a retired supervisor with E.I. DuPont Co. with thirty-three years of service and also a member of the Pensioners Club.
Mr. Toombs was an avid sports enthusiast during his life. He was manager of the DuPont Baseball Team which attended the 1947 World Series. Mr. Toombs was a strong supporter of Old Hickory Dixie Youth League.
Before his employment with DuPont Mr. Toombs was associated with the Nashville YMCA as the Physical Director. During World War II he traveled to Handford Engineering Works, Handford Washington as Director of Recreation. During the latter years of his life he was a football and basketball official with the TSSAA.
Remains rest at the Hadley Chapel of Phillips-Robinson Co., 1700 Hadley Avenue, Old Hickory, where the family will receive friends on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and where funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 30 with Rev. Sherard Edington, officiating. Family and friends will service as Pallbearers. Those desiring may make contributions to the Old Hickory Presbyterian Church. Interment Hermitage Memorial Gardens.
