July 9, 1935 April 12, 2019 Paul James Housman went to be with his Lord on Friday, April 12, 2019, at age 83. He passed peacefully in his home with his loving and devoted wife by his side.
Paul was born on July 9, 1935, in Roanoke, Va. to the late P.C. and Mary Housman. He was married to the love of his life, Kathryn Keller Housman, for 59 years. They enjoyed life together to the fullest raising a family, working hard, having beach time, and traveling. Paul was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He and Kathryn taught their children to love life and people. He enjoyed golf, dancing, singing, jokes and cigars. His passion in his later years were his grandsons. He enjoyed passing along his love for golf and the Texas Tavern.
He was a graduate of Roanoke College where he played basketball and held the record for most consecutive free throws and was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Paul took his love for basketball and made it a career. He was an ACC official from 1971 to 1990. Paul officiated the Final Four Tournament in 1983 and 1988.
He served his country in the National Guard for eight years. Paul owned Paul Housman & Associates where he was an insurance executive for many years. He was a longtime member of Hidden Valley Country Club where they made lifelong friends.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Nancy Noell. He is survived by his wife, Kathryn Keller Housman; daughter, Donna Gayle Russell and husband, Jackie Russell, of Roanoke, Va; daughter, Vicki Housman Davidson and husband, Frank Davidson, of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter, Marianne Housman Hage and husband, Bob Hage, of Roanoke, Va.; and grandsons, Justin Russell, Charlie and Wyatt Hage and Trey Davidson.
A special thanks to Wesley Taylor and Malinda Rhea for being selfless caregivers and showing Paul so much love and attention. Also, we are so grateful for Amedisys Hospice for providing loving care.
Funeral Services will be held at noon on Monday, April 15, 2019, at Oakey's South Chapel. The family will celebrate Paul's life following the service at Hidden Valley Country Club, 2500 Romar Drive, Salem, VA 24153.
