Leroy Lewis Dies, Veteran Coach, 66
Leroy (Pete) Lewis, athletic director, coach and official for 37 years in the Norristown area, died Monday at his home, 630 Selma St., Norristown. He was 66.
Mr. Lewis was a graduate of Norristown High School where he won letters in football, track, baseball and basketball and was named to the all-state football team in 1919. He received a bachelor degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1927 and a master degree in education from Harvard in 1933.
He coached for a year at Altoona High School and then returned to Norristown High School, where he became athletic director in 1945. Besides teaching physical education, he coached the track team.
Served as Referee
Mr. Lewis, who was responsible for many of the athletic programs in the Norristown area, also was director of the winter-summer recreation programs in the district schools.
As a basketball referee, he once estimated that he had officiated more than 3000 games - as many as 140 a season - until his retirement in 1957. The game he said he remembered best was Bob Cousy's first a Holy Cross.
"I just stood around and watched him, but nobody complained because he was all they were looking at."
Record Breakers
Mr. Lewis trained several youths at Norristown High School who later broke world records in track.
Al Cantello, who held the world's javelin record; Josh Culbreath, a world record-holder in the 400-meter hurdles, and Bob Barksdale, who set the world's indoor high jump record, were among his students.
Honors Awarded
Mr. Lewis received many honors for his activities, including awards from the Triangle Club of Montgomery County in 1966, the Track and Field Association of Greater Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Pioneer Club and the Greater Norristown Basketball Oldtimer's Club.
Surviving are his wife, the former Dorothy Brown; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Johnson and Mrs. Albert Brown; a sister, Mrs. Anna Lewis; a brother, Howard, and two grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are being made by Baily Chapel, 815 W. Marshall St., Norristown.
