John Murray, 53, Recreation Chief
John F. Murray, supervisor of recreation, Department of Parks, Queens, died late Thursday night in St. John's Hospital, Long Island City, after a brief illness. he was 53 and lived at 42-60 Ketcham St., Elmhurt.
One of the best known figures in amateur athletic circles in the metropolitan area, he entered the employ of the Park Department in 1930. He also was director of the gymnasium for the Queens Borough Lodge of Elks.
Born in Long Island City, he was active in school athletics. Before he was affiliated with the Park Department he was the athletic director of the K. of C. Athletic Center, Astoria. While there he developed over a period of years, many young men who became prominent in various fields of athletics, including Paul Berlenbach, former world light heavyweight boxing champion.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Catherine Hogan Murray; four sons, Maj. John F. Murray, U.S. Army; Lt. William G. Murray, U.S. Army; James Murray and Joseph Murray, and two daughters, Mrs. Marjorie O'Rourke and Alice Murray.
The funeral will be held from funeral parlors at 90-20 43d Ave., Elmhurts, when arrangements are completed.
