Obituary - Cincinnati Enquirer (November 11, 1984)
John E. Hogan, 83, longtime football and basketball referee, died Saturday at Jewish Hospital. He was a resident of St. Theresa Home in Silverton.
Mr. Hogan helped organize the Ohio Valley Officials Association 58 years ago. He was a familiar figure at high school and college games throughout the area - including those at the University of Cincinnati, Xavier University and Miami University.
He was officiated for the National Football League and the old American Professional Football League, and called games for the original Cincinnati Bengals when they played at Crosley Field in the 1930s.
Mr. Hogan retired from active officiating in 1954 after 30 years in football and 24 years in basketball. He started a free rules clinic for beginning referees in 1956.
A member and past president of the Southwestern Ohio Officials Association, he taught hundreds of new officials during his 20-year tenure as chief instructor for the group. As late as 1976, he was still active as a scout for prospective officials for the Mid-American Conference.
A native of Cincinnati, Mr. Hogan graduate from St. Xavier High School and received a degree in economics from the Xavier University School of Commerce. During World War II, he was stationed at Ft. Benning, Ga., as an assistant field director for the American Red Cross.
He retired from the Minnesota Mutual Insurance Co. in 1976 after 20 years of service. He was a member of the Fenwick Club.
He leaves a son, John A. Hogan of Golden, Colo., and three grandchildren.
