James B. "Jim" Mills, Sr.
APEX - James B. "Jim" Mills, 89, of Apex, NC, died Friday, November 14, 2008 in Southern Pines.
Jim was a renowned North Carolina baseball executive of more than 50 years. He graduated from Apex High School and attended NC State University while playing basketball and baseball. He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox and played in their minor league farm team. After completing four years of service in the U.S. Army, he returned to minor league baseball, where he served as a player/manager from 1946 through 1953. After that, he moved into the front office and worked as a General Manager until the early 1970s. He was a field representative for the National Association of Professional Baseball from 1972-1983.
Jim also served as President of the Carolina League from 1977 until 1983 and served as a special consultant to the Durham Bulls in the 1980s and 1990s. He loved college sports and officiated ACC and SEC basketball and football in the 1950s and 1960s.
Jim was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 and later into the North Carolina High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife, Florence of 63 years and his daughters, Judi Holland, Diane Jones, and Nancy Mills-Smith and son, Jim. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kyle and Eric Holland and Kimberly King, Ashley Hodges and Maddie and Jaycee Mills and great grandchildren Aiden and Ayla Holland and Gabby Hodges.
Services will be held at Green Level Baptist Church in Cary on Monday, November 17, 2008 at 11:00 a.m.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m.
