Jack North, Girls' Athletics Authority, Dies
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Jack North, who was considered the primary authority in Iowa on girls basketball, has died at the age of 79.
The former sports editor the Des Moines Tribune died Thursday at Iowa Methodist Hospital.
North, who was sports editor for 45 years until his retirement in 1960, was also Iowa softball commissioner for 26 years until retiring three years ago.
North had selected the Des Moines Register's all-state football teams for 45 years and the basketball teams for about as long. He also officiated both sports on the high school level and college level for 35 years.
One year North officiated in 47 football games and it was not unusual for him to referee 200 basketball games a season.
After his retirement from the newspaper, North became publicity editor for the Iowa Girls Athletic Union and rated the girls teams in both basketball and softball.
North, born Jacob Joseph Norenbersky on Sept. 1, 1984, is survived by his widow, Jennie, and three daughters. His first wife, Lottie, died in 1944.
Services will be held Sunday at 11 a.m. in Des Moines.
