Howard V. Millard Dies in California
Veteran Scribe Headed Decatur Staff 38 Years
FRESNO, CALIF. - Howard V. Millard, 70, former sports editor of the Decatur Herald-Review for 38 years, died at 3 p.m. Monday in Veteran's Administration Hospital here.
Millard, a 1917 graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University, had been retired for the last three years.
Millard had been stricken suddenly Friday and taken in the hospital where he had been reported in critical condition Sunday night.
Surviving are his wife and one son, Harry, a member of the Modesto, calf., newspaper staff.
While at Wesleyan Millard won three letters in both baseball and basketball. He captained IWU's undefeated 1917 baseball team.
A well-known sports official, Millard was assistant sports editor of the Peoria Star in 1919 before becoming sports editor in 1920 of the Decatur Review and later the Decatur Herald and Review until his retirement in 1958.
Millard officiated college football and basketball in the Big Ten, Missouri Valley and Big Seven conferences as well as high school basketball tournaments in Illinois and neighboring states.
He was past president of the Illinois Associated Press Sports Editors Association, the old Illinois State Baseball League and the Athletic Officials Association of Illinois which he helped organize.
