Former Lexington Mayor Dies at 78
Hogan Lowndes Yancey Sr., 78, former mayor of Lexington and senior member of the law firm of Yancey, Martin and Ockerman, died at 7:16 a.m. yesterday at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.
A native of Louisville, he was a son of the late Rev. and Mrs. George Worth Yancey. He had practiced law in Lexington for more than 50 years.
Mr. Yancey attended Fishburne Military Institute, Waynesboro, Va., the University of South Carolina and Transylvania College. He graduated from Transylvania in 1909 and was admitted to the bar the same year.
An outstanding athlete at Transylvania, he starred in football, baseball and basketball and played professional baseball in Jacksonville, Fla., and Rochester, N.Y.
Mr. Yancey was elected Lexington's city attorney in 1912 and later served two terms as Fayette County attorney. He was elected mayor in 1924.
In 1924 he organized the Lexington Building and Loan Association. That association later became the Lexington Federal Building and Loan Association and Mr. Yancey continued as a director until his death.
He served as chief counsel for the Eastern District of Kentucky for the Office of Price Administration during World War II and continued as chief counsel until the end of the price control laws.
Mr. Yancey was a member of Broadway Christian Church, Lexington Club, Elks Club, Fayette County Bar Association, Kentucky Bar Association and Kappa Alpha fraternity.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Sarah Yancey Abbott, Atlanta; a son, the Rev. Hogan L. Yancey Jr., St. Petersburg, Fla.; a sister, Miss Lela Yancey, Lexington, and seven grandchildren.
The body will be returned to Lexington today and will be taken to Kerr Brothers Funeral Home.
