Varnell Dies; Played for Coach Stagg
Seattle, Feb. 4 (AP) - George M. Varnell, 84, a member of the University of Chicago football team under Coach Amos Alonzo Stagg in the early 1900s and a member of the United States Olympic track team in 1904, died in a hospital today. He had been ill for several months.
Varnell placed fourth in the 200- and 400-meter hurdles in the 1904 Olympic games. He was a former sports editor of the Seattle Times, retiring last September after 41 years with the Times.
In addition to being widely known as a sports writer, Varnell was a football official and coach on the west coast.
Coaches Gonzaga
In 1908, after his graduation from the University of Chicago, Varnell joined the staff of the Spokane, Wash., Chronicle. He also became an unpaid coach of the Gonzaga university football team. Before retiring as an official in 1946, Varnell had worked eight Rose Bowl games, a record.
Varnell moved to Seattle and began work on the Times in 1925. He was a longtime member of the National Football Rules committee. Last spring, he was installed in Spokane's Inland Empire Sports Hall of Fame and the Pacific Northwest Officials' Association awarded him a trophy for service to youths thru officiating.
