Gale B. Robinson
CONNERSVILLE - Gale G. "Clab" Robinson, 86, 1108 Oak St., died Saturday, July 3, at Fayette Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He was born in Greenfield, Ind., the son of Roy and Amelia Branham Robinson. After his graduation in 1924 from Connersville High School as an outstanding basketball player he went on to play at Indiana University and later became a Big Ten basketball official. For several year he officiated the annual holiday basketball tournament that featured Indiana, Purdue, Butler and Notre Dame.
While officiating, he worked as a salesman for John W. Bates Sr., owner of East Side Fuel Company. He was also in business for himself, selling Iron Fireman Coal Stokers. For a while, he worked as an automobile salesman for Roy E. Nelson Ford Agency. For 25 years, before his retirement several years ago, he was a salesman for Connersville Casket Company, and was manager of their Cincinnati sales office at the time of his retirement.
For many years he served with great distinction as Connersville's goodwill ambassador in the realm of athletics. In the late 1940s and 1950s, he served on the local school board and was one of many people who was instrumental in getting Spartan Bowl built.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army military police at West Point Academy in New York. He was a 50-year member of Warren Masonic Lodge, a member of the American Legion, and a former member of the Elks.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Fowler Robinson, whom he married May 18, 1955; two sons, Roy Robinson of Connersville and Dick Robinson of Louisville, Ky.; one daughter, Sonnie Lippincott of Ft. Myers Beach, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchldren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Lois Hall, in 1961.
Service will at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 8, at Showalter-Blackwell Funeral Home, Myers Chapel in Connersville with the Rev. Kenneth W. Chandler officiating. Burial will be in Dale Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 7, at the funeral home where masonic service be at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Shriner's Burns Institute or to the donor's favorite charity.
