7th ranked Kentucky defeated 6th ranked Auburn 72-62 in an 8 PM game played at Rupp Arena. Fox SportsSouth televised the contest. This was the 700th game as a head coach for Auburn's Cliff Ellis. Ryan Hogan made only his 2nd start at UK, following Magloire's benching for his technical foul against Ole Miss and for missing a curfew earlier in the week. As it had done with Maryland earlier in the season, Kentucky gave a team its 1st loss of the season (Auburn had been 17-0 prior to the contest).

Kentucky got the opening tap, and Evans almost instantly hit a 3 pt shot. The Rupp Arena crowd erupted into "Mu" cheers not heard recently. Porter drove easily around Padgett for a layup. After 3 pt misses on both sides, Evans hit his 2nd consecutive 3, for a 6-2 Cat lead. Evans appeared to foul Auburn's B Smith after his 3 pt miss, but Smith was given 3 FTs anyway, making 2 of them. Turner made good use of a screen to give the Wildcats an 8-4 margin. Pohlman hit a 3, then Bradley had a nice layup to make it 10-7 as the 1st TV timeout occurred. The Wildcats had hit 4 of their 1st 5 FG tries. N'Diaye made a tough turnaround shot to bring the Tigers to within 10-9. Auburn took its 1st lead after an Evans 3 miss and an incredible Bradley layup miss, as Porter hit a long 2 (foot on the line) to make it 11-10 AU. After a Heard 15 footer, it was 13-10, but Saul Smith knocked down a 3 after a TV timeout to tie it at 13-13. The next several possessions by both sides were sloppy, with several turnovers and unnecessary fouls. Prince could have been called for a pushoff versus B Smith (although his amount of contact was small), but B Smith was somehow called for a foul. Hogan and Robinson missed, and after a Porter miss, Allison buried a 3 for a 16-13 Cat lead. After a few minutes Pohlman answered back with his own 3, then Kentucky appeared to spread its offense. The crowd uttered a few boos at this "4 corners" style, but it resulted in a relatively open Allison 3 for a 19-16 edge. Allison was hot, and after several Auburn misses, he drove against a taller opponent for a tough layup and a 21-16 Wildcat lead. Both sides next had turnovers, and Padgett was fouled on a steal by B Smith, but no call was made. B Smith took the ball in for a dunk, and it was 21-18. Padgett made 1 of 2 FTs, then N'Diaye had a putback basket. Allison continued his scoring ways with a nice layup, and it was 24-20. Again both sides had turnovers, after which Evans had a nice assist to Prince for a layup and a 26-20 margin for Kentucky. Auburn saw the shot clock wind down and put up a prayer 3 which missed, but it was all Tigers under the board, and after a rebound, Pohlman connected on a 17 footer. Evans missed a 3, but Padgett had a putback and it was 28-22 UK. Finally, Auburn threw the ball away on what should have been the last possession of the half. Kentucky held for the last shot, and after a 20 second timeout, Allison made yet another 3! Kentucky led 31-22 at the half, and Allison's 10 pts were already his career high at UK.

Tayshaun Prince started in the 2nd half in place of Ryan Hogan, and UK went to a man-to-man defense. Both sides began by missing FTs and a 3 pt try, before Turner had a nice driving layup for Kentucky's 1st double digit margin of the game at 33-22. The Cats immediately switched to a zone defense, which didn't stop Porter from dunking a N'Diaye miss. The refs called a jump ball (going to Kentucky) while the replays showed that there was never a jump ball situation (after a Pohlman miss, the ball was still bouncing around between several players). Evans hit a tough 16 footer, and the crowd "Mu"ed as the score went to 35-24 Cats. A Prince miss was tapped back in by Bradley, and it was 37-24. Auburn experienced difficulty from the tougher Wildcat defense, as they hit only 1 of 7 FGs to start the 2nd half. B Smith and Prince exchanged 3s, then Turner had a 10 footer which made it 42-27 UK. Kentucky was doing a better job on both offensive and defensive glass in the 2nd half. Porter made 2 FTs and Evans had a driving layup, then Pohlman hit a 3 while Camara made a 10 footer, and it was 46-32 Wildcats. Porter had a putback dunk, then after several UK misses, he made 1 of 2 FT attempts (Porter had N'Diaye open right under the basket, but insisted on scoring himself, and Evans made sure that he went to the line). Auburn cut the lead to 46-37 after Heard stole the ball and went in for a layup, but Evans put back an Allison miss and was fouled, completing the old- fashioned 3 pt play for a 49-37 Kentucky margin. N'Diaye had a dunk after good passing by Auburn, but Evans answered with a 3 off a good screen. Auburn hit 3 pointers on their next 2 possessions (by Pohlman and Porter), which sandwiched a Bradley dunk and an exquisite Bradley reverse layup, to make it 56-45 Kentucky. Auburn missed twice on its next possession, but the Cats were guilty of an offensive foul, and after another Auburn miss, Turner hit a leaning 8 footer and was fouled, completing another old-fashioned 3 for a 59-45 UK edge. Robinson missed a couple of shots, and Turner missed but by now UK was doing better on the offensive boards and had another possession. Heard finally hit a 15 footer, and Auburn's press began to bother Kentucky as Bradley turned it over. Prince and Porter missed FTs and FGs, but finally Heard made a shot, and it was 59-49 UK. When Porter nailed a tough 12 footer, it was 59-51, and the Rupp Arena crowd grew restless in the face of an Auburn rally. But Turner was fouled by B Smith, and made 1 FT, Bradley hit an 8 footer, and it was 62-51 UK. But the Tigers were not finished - N'Diaye had a putback shot, and when Heard made an open 3, the lead was down to 62-56 Kentucky. Heard fouled Turner, and the double bonus was in effect. Turner again hit only the front end his 2 FTs, but he was fouled on the next possession and again went to the line. For the 3rd time in a row he hit only his 1st shot (each 2nd FT try was far too short), but by now the margin was 64-56 Kentucky. After several Auburn misses on their next possession, Turner was fouled and this time made both FTs, so that the lead was again double digits at 66-56. Bradley put back an Evans miss to make it 68-56, then Robinson hit a 3, after which Evans made 2 FTs for a 70-59 Cat lead. Heard made another 3 as time wound down, and Evans again made 2 FTs. After the last Auburn miss, and UK in possession with 10 seconds left, Auburn did not challenge the Cats and allowed time to expire with Kentucky earning the 72-62 victory.

Allison's 10 pts (in 14 minutes of play) were a career high for him at UK. Auburn's 33.8% FG shooting and 62 pts scored were both season lows for them. Kentucky was the 1st team this season to outrebound the Tigers, 40-38. Auburn had been leading the nation in rebound margin with a +12.3 rpg edge. Kentucky's 56.5% FG shooting from the floor was their best of the season.
