More of the Same (Almost):
The UK-Florida game was very similar in many respects to the Mississippi State game - the Gators led most of the way, UK's offense was still less than stellar, but there was one important difference - this time, Kentucky won 87-77.
Florida took leads of 4-0 and 10-4 (as the Cats started cold once again) on baskets by Hill, DeClerq FTs, Hill FTs, and a Cross 14 footer. UK managed only a Rhodes twisting basket underneath and a basket on a Rhodes drive. The Wildcats took the lead briefly at 11-10 when Pope hit a couple of FTs, but Florida went up 18-14 on a Hill 8 footer, an Anderson layup, a Cross layup, and DeClerq layup. Kentucky continued its pattern of poor shooting. The Gators took a 21-14 lead (just as MSU did in the previous game that week), and their lead bloomed to 28-19 before McCarty hit a jump hook. When Cross hit a layup a few minutes later, the Gators led 32-21. Chris Harrison promptly hit a 3, which fueled a mini-run as Walker got a dunk and McCarty hit a pair of FTs to close to within 32-28. UK tried to stop a Florida runout with 5 men surrounding the man with the ball, and DeClerq got an absurdly simply layup when he was not defended. But Harrison hit yet another 3 to cut the lead to 34-31, although the Gators built the halftime margin back to 40-33 on shots by Hill, Cross, and DeClerq.
Delk and Rhodes scored early for Kentucky in the second half, as the UK press began to bother Florida. But the lead bounced between 3 and 6 points for UF for the next several minutes. Florida several times milked the shot clock down to almost 1-2 seconds before hitting very difficult shots. UK cut the lead to 54-53 on yet another Harrison 3 with around 12 minutes left in the game, and Kentucky tied the score at 56-56 on a Rhodes drive. The two schools traded the lead over the next few minutes. Mark Pope hit a 3 at one point to give UK a 61-60 edge. Florida led last at 71-70 with around 4 minutes remaining, but the Gators could not withstand Kentucky's final run. Prickett hit a 12 footer, after which Pope stole the ball and Delk hit a 3 after a Sheppard miss. Cross hit a pair of FTs, Delk scored on a layup, Cross scored his 30th point on a drive, and Harrison hit a pair of FTs to make the edge 79-75 UK. After Greg Williams hit a couple of FTs with 1 minute left in the game, Florida's scoring was finished for the day. UK managed a Rhodes basket, Pope FTs, Rhodes FTs, and a final Sheppard dunk to make the last margin 87-77 Kentucky.
