Wildcats Hit Thundering Herd with Lightning:
Prior to the game with Marshall, UK Coach Rick Pitino met with Marshall Coach Billy Donovan, and told him "to try to whip Kentucky's ass, because we'll try to do the same to you." John Pelphrey and Billy Donovan received thunderous ovations from the Rupp Arena crowd. Jeff Sheppard got an unexpected start at point guard (part of Pitino's announced "Marshall Plan"). He hit on a sensational 5 of 6 3 pointers and has clearly improved a great deal since the beginning of this young season.
By halftime, UK's performance was already incredible. The Cats had scored 66 points while holding their opponent to 35. UK already had 20 assists, which is as many as Pitino normally expects for an entire game. The Wildcats had already achieved 37 deflections (Pitino wants at least 35 per game). Twenty turnovers had already been forced, and Marshall had hit on only 2 of 11 3 point attempts. The Cats, on the other hand, hit on 12 of 21 3s in the opening stanza.
The Thundering Herd missed on 11 of their 1st 12 shots, and appeared rattled by the huge Rupp Arena crowd. They had 7 turnovers in the game's 1st 5 minutes.
UK started the game with somewhat cold shooting of its own, but still managed a 15-7 lead early. After hitting on 13 of their next 16 shots, they led 48-19 and it was all over but the shouting. Sheppard had 19 points by the end of the half (he took only one shot in the second half). The Cats connected on 12 1st half 3 point shots. After 2 minutes had elapsed in the second half, the Wildcats led by 36 and were content not to expand this lead.
Scott Padgett was set to dunk the ball late in the game on an assist from Mills, but he barely hit the front of the rim with the ball. Padgett was the only Wildcat who played and failed to score.
