Tennessee ends spell, stops Kentucky 75-71
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Tenth-ranked Kentucky has lost its once-firm grip on the Southeastern Conference basketball league and now shares the limelight with Tennessee and Vanderbilt.
The Wildcats lost the lion's share in a 75-71 upset victory by Tennessee at Knoxville Saturday. The game evened Kentucky and the Vols at 4-1 in the conference and Vanderbilt, which was idle, already had that mark.
Kentucky led only twice in the contest and six successful free throws by the Vols' Dickie Johnston in the final 90 seconds put the game. (sic)
"It will be an interesting race from here on in," Tennessee coach Ray Mears predicted after the victory. "It proves to the other teams in the league that if somebody with 6-foot-5 and 6-6 guys can beat somebody else with 6-11 and 7-2 people, maybe they can do it, too."
The Wildcats didn't think they were outdueled, but short-changed in the officiating.
"It was the worst officiated game I've ever been associated with in my life," complained senior guard Mike Casey, who was held scoreless the first half. "The officials just let it get out of hand." Casey came back with 18 points in the second half to lead the Kentucky scoring attack while Larry Steele and Kent Hollenbeck added 14 apiece.
Seven-foot-two Tom Payne also complained the game was allowed to get too rough. "The players, the coaches on the bench, everybody was trying to provoke us into a fight," he said.
Even coach Adolph Rupp had complaints. "Every time we drove the base we ended up on our behinds," he said. "And every time it happened Tennessee got the ball out of bounds."
The Wildcats, 10-3 overall compared to Tennessee at 11-2, remain idle until Saturday when they travel to Baton Rouge for a game with Louisiana State.
