W.E. Arnold, ex-Penn Professor
Dr. William E. Arnold, 77, retired professor of education at the University of Pennsylvania and former dean of Penn's Graduate School of Education, died Friday at The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He lived at 110 Madison Rd. Lansdowne.
Dr. Arnold was a graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan College, Columbia University and Ohio State University. He joined the Penn faculty in 1935 as an assistant professor of education. He was appointed a full professor in 1943 and served as the dean of the School of Education from 1956 through 1963. He retired in 1969.
Dr. Arnold was instrumental in the building of the School of Education. In 1966, the school's alumni gave him their national award of distinction.
Dr. Arnold had served as educational consultant to many public school systems in the mid-Atlantic states. He was co-founder of the National Association of Professors of Educational Administration.
He was considered a leader in the field of school administration, and had written several articles and books on the subject.
Surviving are his wife, the former Ruth Hisle, and a son, the Rev. William Edwin Arnold Jr.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church of Lansdowne, Landowne and Starford Avenues. Interment will be in Lexington, Ky.
