by Walt Schaefer
W. Raymond Farnham, basketball coach at the University of Cincinnati from 1944 to 1946, died Oct. 13 at Mayfair Manor in Lexington, Ky. The former Mariemont resident was 91.
After coaching at UC, Mr. Farnham coached baseball, basketball and football during his tenure at Walnut Hills High School from 1948 to 1964. He came to Cincinnati from Pomeroy, Ohio, to teach American history and social studies at the high school and was named the UC basketball coach while teaching there.
"What impressed me about my father and was optimistic attitude and his telling me to always have courage and never give up," said his daughter, Lindsey Siegfried Ein of Lexiington. "He was positive and and always friendly, and that brought him friends of all ages. Everywhere he went, someone would greet him as 'Coach." His personality, social skills and friendliness remained despite the effects of Alzeheimer's (disease)."
While in Pomeroy, Mr. Farnham coached Tippy Dye, who went on to become a football star at Ohio State University and then played on the first Cincinnati Bengals football team in 1938. Mr. Dye later became Mr. Farnham's brother-in-law in a double wedding ceremony in 1937, when Mr. Farnham wed his wife, Dorothy Russell Farnham, and Mr. Dye marred her sister, Mary.
Mr. Farnham was a graduate of Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio and had a master's in education from Ohio State University. He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Community Church in Terrace Park, Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity, the Indian Hill Club, a charter member of the Indoor Tennis Club of Cincinnati and the oldest playing member there until 1995.
In 1959, Mr. Farnham was hired to manage the Indian Hill Swimming and Tennis Club. Following 15 years there, he joined Comey & Shepherd Realtors.
Before coming to Cincinnati, Mr. Farnham coached several sports and was athletic director at Pomeroy High School and was principal at Pomeroy Junior High School.
