Obituary - Alvin Thompson, 63, Retired Officer of IRS Here, Dies, Lexington Herald (April 23, 1960)
A former officer in the Internal Revenue Service office here and formerly a division chief in the Office of the Collector of Internal Revenue, Mr. Thompson retired in April after 25 years of government service.
He came to Lexington as deputy collector in 1941, transferring from the Louisville office, where he was a division chief. In 1936-37, he served in the U.S. Treasury Accounts office in Raleigh N.C.
He served as division chief in the revenue office here from 1944 through 1954, when he was made revenue officer.
He was born in Bourbon County, a son of the late Albert S. and Mincie Lary Thompson and attended the University of Virginia Prep School and the University of Kentucky in 1916 and 1917.
He was a student at the University when he enlisted in the famed Barrow Unit, a local Medical Corps unit that served overseas in World War I. In World War II, he served in the 380th Heavy Bombardment Group.
After World War I, Mr. Thompson operated a farm and did newspaper work at Paris. He was a registered public accountant.
He was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, the Lexington Elks Lodge and he Clintonville Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Irene Combs Thompson, information clerk in the Lexington IRS office; his son, Alvin H. Thompson, Richmond, Calif.; his sister, Mrs. I.C. Haley, Bourbon County; his stepmother, Mrs. A.S. Thompson, Frankfort, and three grandchildren.
The body was taken to Whitehall Funeral Chapel, where friends may call after 11 a.m. today.
