Obituary - Former bank officer J. Ed Parker Jr. dies, Lexington Herald-Leader (September 20, 1986) by Jennifer Hewlett
With First Security from 1948 until 1973, he headed the bank's farm and real estate department during that time.
"He was a great person. I worked for him back in the early '50s at the bank, and he was one of the great agricultural leaders in this community," retired First Security vice president Paul Sturgill said.
"He was a good family man, just a real decent person. We'll all miss him," Sturgill said.
Parker, who also had been a Fayette County agricultural extension agent for about 25 years and had served as an agricultural agent in Bath County, also was a past president of the National and Kentucky county agricultural agents association and had served as a director of the national, state and local Farm Bureaus.
He was a longtime secretary of the Fayette County Livestock Association and the first president of the Kentucky Farm Managers Association and had been editor of the Journal of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers Association.
He was a Mason County native and received bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Kentucky, where he was a guard on the basketball team. He served in the Navy in World War I.
Over the years, Parker received a number of awards for his work. he once as chosen "Man of the Year" by the Epsilon sigma Phi national agricultural fraternity and had received citations from the National County Agricultural Agents Association and the state government.
He had served on the Spindletop board and had been chairman of the farm committee of the Shakertown Foundation and a member of the advisory committee on the independent College Association.
Parker was a former commander of American Legion Post 42 in Bath County and had served on the draft board in Fayette County during World War II.
He was a member of the Thoroughbred Club of Kentucky and the Thoroughbred Farm Managers Association. He also was a Rotarian and a member of Idle Hour Country Club.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Thomas Parker; a son J. E. "Buddy" Parker III of Lexington; a daughter, Mrs. Harry Orr of Visalia, Calif; a sister; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Lexington Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at W.R. Milward Mortuary - Broadway.
