Obituary - Deward Compton, Murfreesboro (TN) Daily News Journal (November 2, 2001)
Services for Deward "Foots" Compton, 80, formerly of Nashville and Murfreesboro, who died Tuesday, Oct. 30, in Abilene, Texas, will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Jennings & Ayers with burial in Evergreen Cemetery. Leonard Underhill will officiate.
He is survived by daughters, Kathy Cypert of Abilene, Susan Holland of Bradenton,Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Born in Murfreesboro, he lived in Rutherford County until 1951, when he moved to Nashville.. In 1983, he returned to Murfreesboro to live and then moved to Abilene in 1995 to live with his daughter, Kathy Cypert and her son, Samuel Cypert. While in Murfreesboro, he was a member of Sharpsville Church of Christ. He was president of Murfreesboro Freight Line for 32 years. He then became a sales representative for Service Transport Freight Lines, and later worked as a substitute teacher in Rutherford County and Abilene.
He held a bachelors degree from University of Louisville, a masters degree from George Peabody College, and a law degree from the YMCA Law School in Nashville. He was a 32nd degree Mason. In 1939, he led Kittrell High School to its first state basketball tournament after it finished third in the Midstate Regionals. The following year, he transferred to Castle Heights Military Academy, Lebanon, where he earned what was equivalent to All State honors.
In 1944-45, he played for Adolph Rupp at the University of Kentucky. He then transferred to the University of Louisville and earned All American honors, while finishing second in the nation in field goal percentage and serving as captain of the team as it won the NAIB national championship.
In 1962, he coached his alma mater, Kittrell High School, to first place in the Associated Press ratings and a trip to the state tournament. In 1983, he was the final basketball player to be inducted in the Castle Heights Sports Hall of Fame. In 2000,he was inducted into the University off Louisville Hall of Fame.
Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
