Winston Ashley, Manager for Goodwill Industries
Winston Ashley, manager of the industrial services division of Goodwill Industries of South Florida, died of a heart attack Tuesday in Mercy Hospital. He was 67 and lived at 335 Palmwood Lane, Key Biscayne.
Mr. Ashley was named the first executive director of the Sheltered Workshop of Dade County in 1955. His success in this post, in the employment of handicapped men and women, won him the title "Man of the Year," awarded by Phi Delta Kappa education fraternity in 1966.
George Dauth, executive director of Goodwill Industries, said: "Winston Ashley was dedicated to the service of people. His concern for and understanding of all persons, especially the handicapped, made him eminently successful in the field of rehabilitation. He was held in high esteem by both professional and lay persons."
Prior to coming to Miami, Mr. Ashley was director of training for Goodwill in Indianapolis.
He held a bachelor's degree in education from Indiana State University and did graduate work in rehabilitation at the University of Illinois and Columbia University.
Mr. Ashley served as a captain in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of the board of deacons of Key Biscayne Presbyterian Church, the Greater Miami Manufacturers Association and the Allapattah Rotary Club.
Survivors include the wife, Helen; two daughters, Mrs. H.H. Kramer, of Indianapolis, and Mrs. W.B. Seese, of Bluffton, Ind.; three stepsons, Edward F. Yarnell, district sales manager for Eastern Airlines, Key Biscayne; Robert D. Yarnell, of Los Angeles; and Richard Yarnell, of South Whitley, Ind.; three brothers, Ogden and Dr. Paul, both of Chicago, and Laurie, of Indiana, and four grandchildren.
Goodwill employees will hold a memorial service for Mr. Ashley at 3:30 p.m. today in the Goodwill Chapel.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Key Biscayne Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Wabash, Ind. The family has requested donations to Key Biscayne Presbyterian Church.
