Retired Horseman and Coach John R. Devereux Dies at 84
John R. "Pat" Devereux, 84, a former athletic coach at the University of Kentucky and Transylvania College, died Saturday at his home after a long illness.
Devereux, of 5323 Briar Hill Road, was the husband of Gretchen Abrolat Devereux.
He was a retired horseman and the son of the late Patrick B. and Ellan Flynn Devereux.
After graduation from the University of Dayton, he became active in professional and semi-professional baseball and football in the Central Kentucky area.
During the 1920s he coached baseball at UK and also coached both men's and women's basketball at Transylvania.
He served in the Navy during World War II and was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church.
Other survivors are a son, John R. Devereux Jr., Lexington; three daughters, Mrs. Richard Cloyd and Mrs. Jack Foley, both of Lexington, Elizabeth Ann Devereux, Orlando, Fla.; one brother, Thomas F. Devereux, and one sister, Mrs. Matthew J. DeBoor, both of Lexington.
Also surviving are five nieces, four nephews, and three grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Peter's Catholic Church with recitation of the Rosary at 7:30 Monday evening at the W.R. Milward Mortuary-Broadway. Visitation is from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
