Well Known Sports Figure "Ox" Hartley Dies at 75
William "Ox" Hartley, 75, of Evansville, died at 11:30 a.m. yesterday at Deaconess Hospital.
A graduate of Bosse High School, he pitched professional baseball for the Indianapolis Indians before going to the Northern League in Wausau, Wis. Finishing his playing career, he umpired baseball in the Midwest.
He refereed in both the Big 10 and Ohio Valley Conference, along with high school football and basketball. He officiated the Ohio Valley Conference tournament finals four consecutive years.
Retiring from Investor Diversified Services in 1983, he organized the Camaraderie Supreme Golf Tournament for retired referees, coaches and school administration personnel. He also founded the Cardiac Classic-By-Pass Open Golf Tournament for heart surgery persons who still play.
Before his retirement, he was president of Fendrich Golf Course and ran both the Fendrich Open and the Coca-Cola Classic tourneys.
Surviving are his wife, Avelin; daughters, Jolene "Jody" Hartley and Jacquelyn Morrow; a sister, Fannie Gilham; a brother, Max; and grandchildren, Mindy, Mike, Missy and Mark Marrow, all of Evansville.
Services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
