Neal Arntson, Coach at Manual in '20s and '30s, Dies at Age 89
Neal A. Arntson, former basketball and football coach at duPont Manual High School, died Friday in Cincinnati. He was 89.
Arntson, a native of Red Wing, Minn., coached football and basketball at Manual from 1921 to 1931. He had been a star quarterback for the University of Minnesota.
Arntson led the Manual basketball team to state championships in 1923, 1925 and 1931. During his tenure, the school's football team also posted several victories over Male High School, a big rival.
Arntson was instrumental in the building of Manual's stadium and gymnasium. After leaving the coaching position at Manual, Arntson taught mathematics at Western Junior High School for several years before leaving Louisville.
He was Army veteran of World Wars I and II.
Survivors include his wife, the former Winifred DeWeese, and two sisters, Evalyn Hendrickson of Duluth, Minn., and Florence Abraham of Minnetonka, Minn.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Christ Episcopal Church in Red Wing, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery there.
