John J. Ruffino Jr.
Teacher, referee, 82
John J. Ruffino Jr., 82, of Newtown Square, a retired teacher who refereed sports for 35 years, died of melanoma Saturday at his home.
Mr. Ruffino played football at Darby High School During World War II he served in the Navy in Hawaii. After his discharge he earned a bachelor's degree from Temple University, where he played football.
He then taught American history and coach basketball and tennis at the former Collingdale High School. While teaching, he refereed college and high school football and basketball games. During summers, he managed the pool at Waynesborough County Club. When he was younger he also modeled for print ads and television commercials, high daughter, Kim Corcoran said.
After retiring from Collingdale in the early 1980s, Mr. Ruffino continued to referee basketball and football games and added volleyball. He officiated for that sport into his 70s, his daughter said.
Mr. Ruffino was a member of the Eastern Association of Intercollegiate Football Officials and the Suburban Philadelphia Chapter of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association. In 1996 he was inducted into the Delaware County Sports Hall of Fame.
He was an avid golfer and an Eagles fan.
In addition to his daughter, Mr. Ruffino is survived by a son, Kyle; another daughter, Kay Ward; five grandchildren; and his former wife, Gloria Cramp.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Donohue Funeral Home, 3300 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, where friends may call after 10.
