John Paul Evans Jr. was born in American Falls to J. Paul Evans and Lorene Zaring Evans.
He completed his education at U of I lettering in three sports. He was president of the Sigma Nu fraternity. During WW II he was commissioned Ensign as a Navy pilot.
He was married to his college sweetheart Jane Thompson for 52 years before her passing in 2000.
He coached football and basketball at Pocatello High in the 50's then coached basketball from 1959 to 1963 at Idaho State. When Highland High school opened he became its first Vice Principal. He started state track meets and worked as a Big Sky and WAC referee for many years. He was inducted into the Idaho State Athletic Hall of Fame.
John served as mayor of Pocatello from 1980 to 1983 and spent 12 years on the city council. He was president and district governor of Rotary International. His Pocatello Chief name "Fair Play" best described his love of sports but also his willingness to listen to both sides and find solutions that were fair to all parties. He was given the Governor's Certificate of Recognition "for service to Idaho with distinction, loyalty and ability."
After retiring he lived a few years in Spokane before settling full time in Laguna Woods CA where he played many rounds of golf. He was always a gracious host who enjoyed playful banter with everyone he met.
He was loved by his two daughters Cynthia Hebein (Fred) Yorba, Linda CA and Marcia Goicoechea, San Diego CA. His second wife, Virginia Pollack predeceased him in 2014. He had six grandchildren Christopher, Melissa, and Jennifer Hebein and Tera, Gina, and John Goicoechea.
