Veteran Coach Taken by Death
MIDLAND - James Barclay, 62, of 5307 Nurmi, coordinator for physical education for Midland Public Schools, died Wednesday night at his home. Barclay had been basketball and golf coach at Midland High School and earlier was basketball coach at Flint Northern High School where his teams won four state Class A basketball championships.
Born Dec. 9, 1905 in Kilburnie, County of Ayshire, Scotland, he came at the age of seven with his family to Flint. He was graduated from Flint Central High School in 1923 and Eastern Michigan University in 1928. He did graduate work in education at the University of Michigan.
He taught in Flint from 1926 to 1943 and came to Midland in 1945. He was a member of the Midland Recreation Council, Sports Sages of Michigan, Michigan Coaches Association, and the American Association of Physical Education and Health Recreation.
He leaves his widow, Ruth, two sons, one daughter, one brother, one sister, and three grandsons. The funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at Midland Memorial Presbyterian Church. Burial arrangements are incomplete. Friends may call at Wilson Funeral Home here after 7 tonight.
