DURKIN Jon H. "Jack", 90, passed away Thu, Dec 16, 2010 at St. Joseph Hospital.
Born in McRoberts, KY, April 14, 1920, he was the son of the late Joseph Hartley and Lillie Brown Durkin. Mr. Durkin was a veteran of WW II, having served as a Master Sergeant, stationed mainly in Italy.
He was a founding father of the American Board of Opticianary, and dedicated several decades of his life to certification and education for all opticians. Mr. Durkin started his career at Tinder Krauss Tinder Opticians and spent well over fifty years there, eventually becoming President, and majority stockholder of the company. He also owned and operated Blue Grass Optical, a wholesale optical lab.
Accomplishments include: Chairman of the National Contact Lens Examiners, President of the Optician's Association of America, President of the Contact Lens Society of America, President of the International Guild of Dispensing Opticians, President of the Dispensing Opticians of KY, and Chairman of the KY Licensing Board. In 1994, Mr. Durkin was named "Guild Optician of the Year" at an International meeting in Toronto, Canada.
He was involved in the Lexington community; serving as President of the Meadowthorpe Optimist Club and later as the KY/WVA Governor for Optimist International. He coached little league baseball for several years and also taught Sunday school and served on the board at Broadway Christian Church.
He loved athletics all his life. Mr. Durkin was an NCAA College Football referee for over 32 years and an NCAA College basketball referee for 16 years. He also served as President of the Ohio Valley Conference.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mary Margaret "Peggy" Durkin; a son, James Russell Durkin; his sister Gloria Looney; his brothers, Joseph, Harry, Maurice, and William Durkin. He is survived by his daughter, Janis (Ken) Dougherty, Lexington; his son, Jon E. (Vicky) Durkin, Lexington; and daughter, Joyce Baker, Versailles, KY; seven grandchildren, Kimberly Bowles, Snellville, GA, Andrea (Wally) Calderon, Sevierville, TN, Edward Dougherty, Ypsilanti, MI, Holly Durkin, Lexington, Mary Rose Durkin, Tucson, AZ, Dawn (Jimmy) Rhodus, Versailles, KY, Heather (Todd) Barrick, Lawrenceburg, KY; two great-grandchildren, Sydney Rhodus and Hadley Bunton; and a sister, Leila Barnes, Lexington.
Funeral service will be 10 am Mon at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Road. Burial will follow in the Lexington Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 pm Sun at the funeral home.
