Memorial Service For Hellmich Today
A memorial service for Hudson A. Hellmich, a standout athlete at the University of Illinois in the 1930s and a former coach at Washington University, is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Coventry Prebyterian Church, 2143 N. Ballas Road.
Mr. Hellmich died Thursday of a heart attack. He was 73. A private graveside service was held Saturday.
Mr. Hellmich was a four-sport athlete at Soldan High who won 10 letters before his graduation in 1929. He participated in basketball and track at Illinois, and in his senior basketball season was captain of the Illini and was named the center on the All-Big Ten Conference team.
He coached track and basketball at Washington U. from 1935-40, then retired to take over his family's business, the Hellmich Printing Co.
