Obituary - Washington DC Evening Star (September 6, 1948)
Harlan Page Sanborn, Athletic Coach and Teacher, Dies at 58
Funeral services for Harlan Page Sanborn, 58, former high school teacher and athletic coach here, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Fort Myer Chapel. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
Mr. Sanborn, who lived at 5027 Forty-first street N.W., died Thursday in Montreal while conducting an educational tour. He had been conducting historical tours for educational groups for about 10 years.
A native of Wakefield, N.H., Mr. Sanborn attended Brewster Academy at Wolfeboro, N.H. and was graduated from Dartmouth College in 1911.
Coached at Several Schools
He then taught romance language and coached football, baseball and basket ball at Greenbrier Military Academy, Lewisburg, Va.; Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, Va.; Woodbury Forest School, Orange, Va., and Asheville (N.C.) School for Boys.
Mr. Sanborn came to Washington in 1924. He taught and coached at McKinley and Eastern High Schools and Emerson Institute before starting his educational tour work.
He refereed many Southern Conference basket ball games and, in 1926, when the basket ball coach at the University of North Carolina became ill, he substituted as coach.
Served in Both Wars
During World War I, Mr. Sanborn served as first lieutenant in France with the Army and during World War II was a major in Army ordnance.
He was a Mason, a member of Acca Temple Shrine in Richmond, Va., and a member of the Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Martha L. Sanborn; two daughters, Joan Lawton Sanborn of the Forty-first street address, and Mrs. James D. Appel of 3365 Runnymede Place N.W., and a grandson.
