Col. Bacon R. Moore, Retired Attorney, Dies
HARRODSBURG, Ky., June 6 (Special) - Col. Bacon Rochester Moore, 79, retired Harrodsburg attorney, who organized the 38th Tank Company of the National Guard here, died at 3:45 p.m. today at his home on the Old Danville Road after a long illness.
He was born in Mercer County Feb. 18, 1887, the son of Bacon Rochester and Nannie Smith Bowman Moore. He was graduated from Harrodsburg Academy in 1906 and from the University of Kentucky and did further studies at Transylvania University. He was admitted to the bar in 1910 and was admitted to practice in the Court of Appeals in 1919.
He farmed and practiced law from 1910-1917 when he entered military service. During World War I he served as a second lieutenant. He formerly was a member of the Kentucky Disabled Ex-Servicemen's Board.
Col. Moore served as special U.S. Attorney, Department of Justice, attached to Lands Division; in both the Eastern and Western districts of Kentucky, in connection with the condemnation and purchase of land for Mammoth Cave National Park, Coalins Forest, Princeton Game Refuge, Kentucky Ridge Forest and Cumberland National Forest.
In 1932 he organized the 38th Tank Company. He was at that time promoted to the rank of major and placed in command of the company. He held the rank of lieutenant colonel when the company was shipped overseas as Company D, 192nd Tank Battalion. During World War II the unit participated in the Bataan Death March. When the battalion was shipped overseas, Col. Moore was ordered to Fort Knox, where he commanded tank troops at the Armored Force Center until the end of the war.
In 1959, the Kentucky State Bar Association conferred upon him the title Senior Counselor in recognition of his 50 years of honorable service at the bar and continued interest in the legal profession.
Col. Moore served as president of the Mercer County Bar Association, Douglas Laws Post, American Legion, and as state commander of the American Legion, Department of Kentucky.
He was a former member of the Civil War Round Table and the Kentucky State Historical Society, a former president of the Harrodsburg Historical Society, a former state chaplain of the Huguenot Society, a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity and the Kappa Alpha Lawyers Club.
He served as a deacon and elder of the Harrodsburg Christian Church for more than 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Eula Ben Conley Moore; two daughters, Mrs. Winthrop Hopson, Cadiz, and Mrs. William D. Oldham, Washington, D.C.; a son, Dr. Bacon R. Moore III, Harrodsburg, and several grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Bruner and Sims Funeral Home by the Rev. James N. Kelly and the Rev. Charles S. Perry. Military rites will be held in Spring Hill Cemetery. The body will be taken to the residence, Highland, at noon Tuesday and will be returned to the funeral home at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
