Buckeye Native Andy Rios Dies
by Annemarie Moody and Bob Young
Andy Rios, a Buckeye native and athletic director for Buckeye Elementary School District, has died.
Rios was also a longtime Arizona basketball official who worked in the Pac-10, Big Sky, Mountain West, West Coast and Western Athletic conferences. He previously worked at Buckeye Middle School as a teacher, assistant principal and principal.
"Andy was a person who was very passionate about what he did," said Jane Hunt, Buckeye Elementary assistant superintendent. "The school and the kids were his family."
Rios was a food lover, and "not a week went by without him bringing in a Crock-Pot of something and inviting everyone to eat," Hunt said.
A Crock-Pot memorial will be held this week for the Buckeye Elementary staff to remember their friend and colleague.
Rios was a familiar face at Phoenix Suns training camps where he officiated camp scrimmages. He also worked games for 27 years in Tommy Nu–ez's National Hispanic Basketball Classic in the Valley.
In 1993, Rios was given last rites at a Valley hospital before undergoing a desperation surgery that he was not expected to survive.
But he did.
He kept a framed Republic article from 1999 about his brush with death in his office. "He said he cheated death once, so he lived a full life and enjoyed every minute," Hunt said.
Rios, 52, died Nov. 5 from complications of the condition that caused a blood clot that led to the surgery all those years ago.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at SS. Simon and Jude Cathedral, 6351 N. 27th Ave., Phoenix
