Cats Trounce USC

Kentucky beat South Carolina impressively in Columbia today, by a score of 64-48. Im the end, South Carolina simply had no answer for Jamaal Magloire. He finished with 15 points. Prince added 13 and Camara 12 for the Wildcats (11-5, 2-1), who bounced back after a tough loss down in Auburn. It was the largest margin of defeat for the season by South Carolina, which fell 22 points below its yearly scoring average tonight.

Good solid defense,'' the UK coach Tubby Smith said. "We were challenging shots and making them go to the second and third options.''

Kentucky faced an angry, vocal crowd in Columbia. The game was tight through the first few minutes of the game, with the Wildcats holding the slimmest of margins at 13-12, at the 11:42 mark. Over the next 4:38, the Kentucky defense forced 7 straight turnovers and offensively, Kentucky began to click, primarily behind Jules Camara, Magloire and Prince. Camara began the run by hitting a 15-footer to five UK a 15-12 lead. Prince made a half court steal and drive for an uncontested dunk. Jules then made a great pass to Tay Prince for a score on the following possession and UK led 19-12 with 9:30 remaining. Bogans then made a steal and was fouled on his shot, draining both free throws. Three more Kentucky baskets gave the Cats a 27-15 lead, completing a 14-3 run, including 12 points off Gamecock turnovers. South Carolina tried to hang in there but left the floor down 37-23 at the half. South Carolina shot a mere 7-26 from the floor as Kentucky's Camara, Magloire, Stone and Prince contested every shot. UK shot 13-17 inside the arc for the half but were 0-8 from three-point range. Magloire led all scorers in the first half with 13 points on 5-6 FG shooting.

South Carolina Coach Eddie Folger thought his team gave up early in the contest, "Mentally, it looked like our kids thought, `It's one of those days; it's not going to go for us,' " he said. "We just couldn't put it down. That started permeating, in my opinion, in their minds in the middle of the first to late first half. And Kentucky had a bunch hit the rim and go in. That almost permeated it even more to some degree."

In the second half, both teams opened up playing tough defensively and neither team scored on multiple possessions. Eddie Lee Davis finally hit a single free throw to break the ice after 4:07 of the second half had gone by without a score. Camara followed up an Allison miss with a thunderous dunk to extend UK's lead to 39-24. Two more Camara FT's on the following possession gave UK its biggest lead at 41-24 with 14:30 remaining. An Allison jam to finish a break extended the lead to 43-24. Grant finally hit a three to give USC their first field goal of the second half with 12:40 remaining in the game. Over the next ten minutes, the game would remain with Kentucky holding a 15-20 point lead. First, Herbert Lee Davis would later hit a three pointer, then a FT, to draw the Cocks to within 15 at 47-32 with 10:00 remaining. But Kentucky answered as Bogans drained UK's first three pointer at the 9:00 mark. Then Camara connected on an alley oop pass from Saul Smith, and the lead was 52-32. But USC would answer with five points of their own and the lead was 52-37. Magloire scored his 15th point on the next trip, UK 54-37 at the 5:56 mark. Prince followed with the Cats' 2nd three pointer and the lead was back to 20. A three by Ross and 2 FT by Lucas and once again the lead was 15 with 3:25 to go.

USC shot just 13 of 48 overall. They ended with 17 turnovers and just 13 field goals. it was the Gamecocks' worst shooting since a 24.6-percent accuracy at UK last February. One thought was that the Gamecocks were mentally and physically spent after taking undefeated Syracuse into overtime just three days earlier, a thought Folger dismissed, "Our big guys are not Camara or Magloire yet, who will be two first-round draft picks without a doubt," Coach Folger said. "When I think our players should not say something, I tell them. I told them, 'You have the right to say you're tired.' I say, baloney.''

South Carolina, fell to 9-7 overall and 1-2 in the SEC.
