Cats Win Ugly 62-42

Just win, baby.

With apologies to the Oakland Raider organization, the Cats played poorly in this game, but just won, baby, and came away with a decisive 20 point win over the Division II Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves, 62-42. Kentucky had a very balanced scoring attack, with 3 players scoring 10 points each (Tayshaun Prince, Jamaal Magloire, and Marvin Stone), and 2 players scoring 9 each, Saul Smith and Keith Bogans. J.P. Blevins also added 7.

After spurting out to a 7-0 lead, the Cats then fell behind 16-13 to Alaska. After falling behind, Saul Smith scored 7 consecutive points for the Cats, who were never seriously challenged after that, although they could not pull away from the Seawolves.

The Cats shot very poorly on the evening, hitting 37% from the field, including an absolutely frigid 6% on 1-17 shooting from 3 point range. For much of the game, images of the last game Kentucky failed to hit a 3 pointer ran through our heads--a loss to Seton Hall in the 1988 Great Alaskan Shootout. Only a "shooter's roll" 3-pointer by J.P. Blevins late in the 2nd half preserved that Kentucky streak of at least 1 3-pointer made in every game since 1988. Kentucky was also outrebounded by Alaska by 2 in the game. Jamaal Magloire had his streak of "double-doubles" broken in this game, as Marvin Stone led Kentucky with 7 rebounds.

Tubby Smith called his team not emotionally in the game, and chalked it up to coming off 2 big wins, Christmas Break, and having a young team learning how to handle prosperity. The Cats defense won this game for them, causing 25 turnovers, including 11 steals, and blocking 9 shots. Jules Camara led Kentucky with 4 blocked shots, and Tayshaun added 3. Kentucky also had more than 50 deflections in the game.

Kentucky manages to win their 3rd game in a row, and moves to 7-4 on the season. UK moves on to play a tough Missouri team on Thursday in the Nokia Sugar Bowl Festival in New Orleans.
