The Wildcats crushed an outmanned Broncs team by a 96-52 score in the NCAA 1st round game at Memorial Coliseum in Nashville. The game was so one-sided that Pitino had to ask his players at the half not to try to reach 100 points, and not to press. After reaching a 39 point edge at the half, UK only gained another 5 points in the second half. Rider coach Kevin Bannon afterwards admitted "To be brutally honest, they were very kind."
Kentucky only had 3 players in double figures in scoring nearly 100 points, but there was very balanced scoring. UK didn't launch or complete a large number of 3 point shots, but then, these weren't really needed in such a one-sided game. Only one Rider player scored in double figures, and he got only 11.
The 44 point margin of victory surpassed Kentucky's previous NCAA record of 33 points (over Notre Dame in 1958). UK's 19-2 spurt in the game's first 3 minutes decided the contest. Rider did manage to obtain a lead, at 3-2 with 19:03 minutes left in the first half. UK's first 13 baskets came on basic shots: layups, put-backs, dunks, or one-sided postups. The Bronc center Jabbar Jones picked up 3 fouls less than 4 minutes into the game, trying to stop Jamal Mashburn.
Andre Riddick scored a career high 16 points. Rider star Darrick Suber had his initial shot blocked by Riddick, and his third shot was a rushed 3 pointer airball. Suber didn't score until 7:34 remained in the first half, and ended with 11 points, well below his 22.6 ppg average.
Rider reserve Mark Wilcox received a technical foul after Ford hit his first 3 pointer. On the ensuing possession, Mashburn hit 2 free throws, resulting in a 7 point possession.
