Kentucky Wins Season Opener:

Whereas the NCAA game against Duke last season was a loss which felt like a win, this game was a win which felt like a loss. The Wildcats simply could never get on track or sustain their offense, but they had so much talent that they couldn't lose either. UK had several nice spurts of decent offense, but they could not maintain their poise, and although their defense was on the whole superb, they suffered a few breakdowns which occasionally cost them. Both teams may have been a little nervous, considering that it was their first game. Also, 14 NBA scouts were in attendance, most of them to see Wright State forward Bill Edwards.

Travis Ford had 6 turnovers in the first half, including two straight occasions when he simply dropped the ball out of bounds while attempting to inbound it. Kentucky as a team had 17 first half turnovers, several of which were unforced. But the biggest story of the first half was that Mashburn was shut down - 0 points, 0 rebounds.

Jeff Brassow came off the bench (on a whim, according to Pitino in his post-game show) and really sparked the team. But he bumped his bad knee again, and may require surgery (they were supposed to know by Thursday, but so far no word).

Charlie Mc continued his streak of asking stupid questions during the interviews of the players of the game. I predict fans will get really tired of him by the end of the season, barring major league improvement. Dent was the player of the game.

In his post-game comments, Pitino praised Ford lavishly, even with all his turnovers. Rick said that Ford was pressing, and then himself had to respond to a press, which was tiring. Pitino warned that Georgia Tech very likely has 4 future 1st round NBA draft picks among their starters, and one 2nd rounder. He called on fans to "bring down the house" with noise in support of Kentucky in one of its biggest early games.
