Arnelle Scores 22 To Top Both Teams in NCAA Tourney

RALEIGH, N.C., March 21 - Adolph Rupp's Kentucky Wildcats easily disposed of Penn State, 82-54, here tonight, their twenty-third straight victory, their first in the current round of the NCAA basketball playoffs and twenty-ninth in 31 games this season.

The Southeastern Conference champions, flashing the same form that carried them to three National titles in the last five years, pulled away after six minutes of play and were never headed. The halftime count was 43-25.

St. John's downed North Carolina State, 60-49, to qualify to meet Kentucky in tomorrow night's final found here. Penn State will oppose North Carolina State in the Consolation prelim.

Arnelle Nets 22

Penn State's only threat in a game which saw the opposition hit a 43 per cent of its shots was Freshman Jesse Arnelle, who netted 22 points before he fouled out two minutes from the end.

The Nittany Lions, clearly out of their class against the nation's top-ranking team, took the lead on Arnelle's fielder 50 seconds after the game opened and stayed with the Wildcats for five minutes before they faded. The Kentuckians boasted a 27-18 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

It was Arnelle, who outscored Kentucky's All-American, Cliff Hagan by two points, who provided the only scoring punch the losers revealed in their 40 minutes of play. Arnelle gathered 13 of his 22 points in the half as Hagan picked up a foreboding 15.

The statistics rather than the scoring sequence tell the full story of the game. Kentucky hit on 43 per cent of its shots. Penn State only on 25 per cent. Hagan, Kentucky's top man, hit on 42.9 per cent of shots as high-scoring Arnelle was hitting on only 30.9 per cent of his tries.

Kentucky Wins Rebound Battle

Kentucky, a notably fine rebounding team, also outclassed the Nittany Lions in that department, taking the ball off the boards 59 times as compared with Penn State's total of 43. Frank Ramsey was top man with 14 rebounds, as compared with 13 for Arnelle.

Wildcat Lou Tsioropoulos chipped in with 13 rebounds, followed by Hagan with 11. Jack Sherry was the only Lion to give Arnelle help under the boards as he grabbed the ball 11 times.

Herm Sledzik threw in 12 points and Sherry 10 as Hagan gained stellar support from Shelby Linville with 12 points, Ramsey with 11 . . .
