U. of Kentucky Falls Before Irish, 59 to 58
Louisville, Ky., Jan. 27 [Special]. - Notre Dame defeated Kentucky tonight before a sellout crowd of 6,000, 59 to 58, in an overtime period.
After being behind by 14 points with 18 minutes to go, Kentucky tied the score at 53 all with 5 seconds to go, when Jack Tingle made one of two free throws he was awarded when fouled by Frank Gilhooley.
This sent the game into the extra session, and Billy Hassett, Vince Boryla, and Johnny Dee dropped in baskets to give the Irish the game.
George Ratterman led the Irish to a substantial 25 to 13 lead in the first 15 minutes but failed to score in the second half. During the last five minutes of the first half, the Irish clung to their 12 point margin, altho Tingle, Kentucky's high scorer with 21 points, hit the basket three times before the whistle halted activities, with Notre Dame leading, 35 to 23.
In the first three minutes of the second half, the two teams totaled 19 points, but then the Irish attack stalled, and Kentucky, led by Dutch Campbell, began to creep up. Campbell's 12 points made the score read 49 to 45 in favor of Notre Dame with six minutes to go.
Boryla got a basket, but when Campbell and Tingle connected, and Campbell again scored to tie the game at 51 all. Dee put Notre Dame ahead with a side shot.
