Mauer's Team Bewilders Opponents With Deceptive Attack: Holds Foes to Five Field Goals

Wildcats, by Brilliant Playing Become Favorites to Capture Title

ATLANTA, Ga., Feb. 25 -- Kentucky looked great, wonderful, magnificent, brilliant, scintillating, etc., etc., in punching Georgia's ticket for a return trip to Athens here tonight. The Wildcats chewed up the Bulldogs before the home folks, 33 to 16, and will meet the University of Mississippi team in the auditorium here Monday night at 8 o'clock in the semifinal of the annual Southern Conference basketball tournament.

Rising to the heights and playing their best game of the year against the Georgia team of six-footers, the Wildcats smothered the Bulldogs with their knifing attack. Passing the ball from one to another with what local scribes call the submarine pass the men of Mauer worked carefully time after time evading the hard fighting Georgia defense for crip shots. The Wildcats tried few shots from beyond the foul line and but one of these was good.

Kentucky's style of offense, new to these parts, had the Georgia team bewildered within five minutes, the 'Cats leading at that time, 10 to 1. With every member of the starting quintet in top form, the Kentuckians made monkeys of the Bulldogs, and before long the large crowd, which had been divided, united in praising the scientific and brilliant attack of the Wildcats.

Georgia was held to five field goals, two of which came after the cold Kentucky substitutes went in late in the final period. Both of them were the result of long shots. The Bulldogs could make only one crip shot - a high tribute in the brilliant guarding of Captain Jenkins and Lawrence McGinnis.

On the attack, the play of Paul McBrayer was the most spectacular. The Lawrenceburg boy traveled at high speed from one end of the floor to the other in going from offense to defense, or vice versa. Combs was watched closely and made only two field goals, but his team work was brilliant and Kentucky's offense never faltered. Georgia finally became groggy, and the Wildcats did everything but hide the leather on the Bulldogs.

Kentucky is now the favorite to win the tournament, the last of the experts have stepped into line after seeing them win tonight. Local hotels are making room for a big delegation from Lexington Monday.

Georgia-Kentucky Play-by-Play

The following play-by-play report is furnished Herald readers through the courtesy of Earl Hall Payne, manager of the Kentucky theater:

First Half

Georgia was three minutes late in reaching the floor and at 8:05 the referee tossed the first ball high in the air. Combs got the ball on the tip. The Cats missed two shots. Jeffries was fouled by Martin and he made both free tosses good. They messed about under the Georgia basket, using a man-to-man defense. McBrayer fouled Keen and he made one free toss. On the next jump Georgia continued to get the tip. Jenkins fouled Keen. He missed and the Cats still held their slim one-point lead. Passes carried the ball down the floor where three shots were missed and Kentucky got possession of the ball. Lautenheizer fouled Jeffries. He missed a free toss, but Combs batted the ball in, Kentucky 4, Georgia 1.

A beautiful passing game, with Combs receiving the ball, resulted in a spectacular goal, Combs making the shot. The two centers jumped at the foul line, McBrayer missed by inches and Combs smacked in a field goal. Kentucky 8, Georgia 1. Combs missed a long one and no one followed. Jenkins snatched the ball from Keen and started a long dribble, passing to Jeffries, who sank a beautiful one-handed shot, forcing Georgia to take time out with the score 10 to 1 against them.

Jeff missed a long shot and Keen dribbled to mid-floor where he shot a long field goal. McGinnis was fouled by Lautezenheizer. He missed two free throws. McBrayer fouled drew and he made the shot good. combs jumped with Martin and Keen shot a field goal from mid-floor, Kentucky 10, Georgia 6. On the next jump Jeffries grabbed the ball and sank a long field goal from the side. Combs grabbed the ball off the back board and passed to McGinnis, who dodged inside the foul line for a field goal. McBrayer outjumped Drew for the first time, but McGinnis fouled Keen, who missed. Keen fouled Jenkins and he made his shot good. Kentucky 15, Georgia 6.

McGinnis fouled Palmer, who missed both free tosses. Combs could not follow through on a shot and Georgia got the ball only to have Keen throw it clear over the board. Kentucky got the ball out of bounds and Combs handed it to McGinnis, who passed it to Jeffries, who dribbled to the side for a spectacular one-handed shot for a field goal. Georgia tried a trick long shot but McBrayer got the ball high in the air and took a pass, dribbling through the entire team for a crip field goal. Kentucky 19, Georgia 6. The half ended here.

Second Half

Georgia switched to a moving defense, but Kentucky was making use of a three-man attack, one down the middle and one down on each side. Combs fouled Keen, who missed the shot. Jeffries faked the ball, smiling all the time, and passed to McGinnis, who drove under the mesh for a field goal. Jeffries slipped and fouled Keen, who missed again. Jeffries faked another shot and passed to McBrayer, who slipped past the heavy Georgia guards for a field goal. On the next tip-off Jenkins fouled Keen, and he made one shot. Jeff was fouled by Lautzenheizer. He missed. A foul was called on Combs for blocking, but he missed, only to have Drew bat the ball through the hoop to make the score 23 to 9.

Georgia was playing a mighty rough game and aroused the fans' displeasure. Drew fouled Jenkins who made a free throw. Combs intercepted a pass and took his time working up the floor. Drew shot clear over the basket board and got real raspberries. McBrayer grabbed the ball, and passed to McGinnis who again drove clear through Georgia's defense for a field goal. Georgia was completely outclassed. Kentucky bounced under the Bulldogs and passed over their heads at will. McBrayer snagged the ball and shot a one-handed field goal, being fouled as he shot by Lautzenheizer. The goal counted and McBrayer made one free shot, making the score 29 to 9.

Georgia got the ball and threw wildly into the player's bench. Keen fouled Jenkins, who made hit shot good, running the count to 30. The work of Jeffries was marvelous. Keen fouled Jenkins but he missed. A foul was called on Combs and Drew made a foul shot making the score 30 to 10.

Jeffries missed a long shot. Combs was put out for fouling Martin. Owens, Milward and Dees entered the game for Kentucky with a short time left to play. Martin made two free throws but it was too late now. Palmer came through with a long field goal to make the score 30 to 14. Drew crashed through for a long shot from the center circle. Milward stopped a sure field goal under the basket. Jeffries passed to Milward who made a crip under the net. Drew fouled Milward and he made the shot good, making the score 33 to 16. The game ended a minute later.
