University of Kentucky Basketball Team Defeats Vanderbilt by Score of 37 to 18

WILDCATS VICTORS IN ROUGH CONTEST

The University of Kentucky basketball squad played circles around the Vanderbilt quintet at the University gymnasium, completely outclassing and defeating the invaders from Tennessee by a score of 37 to 18. The Vanderbilt five put up a good fight and a hot opposition to the smooth team work of the Wildcats, but never threatened to win.

During the first half the Wildcats played such basketball as defeated Centre last Friday night, with the visitors so far behind that the local team several times stopped by the wayside, like the confident hare in the fable, and indulged in clownish actions for the amusement of the galleries. The utter inability of the Commodores to handle the Wildcats pass work was taken by the crowd, about 99 3/4 percent of which was made up of Kentucky fans, to be a clever little vaudeville. The score after about eight minutes play was 12 to 1 in favor of the locals. At the end of the first half the score was 23 to 6.

The Vandy men, however, put a quietus - on the vaudeville idea in the last half when they started a new attack of swift offensive and defensive work. The Wildcats were forced to put out their most brilliant efforts to score on the visitors. Shortly after the second half started, Referee Hinton called a personal foul on Ridgeway and the galleries hooted him indignantly. After that the game took on a warlike appearance and both teams started roughing it up. The galleries stopped laughing and began pleading for the Wildcats to make more points. The crowd was certainly bloodthirsty and the Wildcats tore their way through the Vandy offense time after time until the final score stood at 37 to 18.

There was a dispute, however, as to whether the score was 37 to 18 or 39 to 18. "Bobby" Lavin heaved in a field goal just as the shot announcing the end of the game was fired. One timer said the goal counted, while the other maintained the ball had not left Lavin's hand when the shot was fired. Referee Hinton ruled the goal no good.

Basil Hayden and Bill King carried on a floor work and goal shooting demonstration that was the feature of the whole contest. Bill gets the ball anywhere on the floor, dribbles through a five man attack, feeds it to Hayden, and Hayden shoots 'em from all angles and all positions. Ridgeway held up a barrage of guarding throughout the contest that was a volcanic disaster to any of his opponents who attempted to shoot a goal. Lavin's floor work was good, but not up to the standard it held before his injury a couple of weeks ago in the Centre game.

Morrow, guard, was the outstanding player of the Vanderbilt five. He threw two field goals and caged four fouls out of five tries. Thomas, center, threw three of Vandy's seven field goals.

Seventeen fouls were called during the contest, 12 on the Commodores and five on the Wildcats.
